The following is meant to be evocative, informational and demonstrate how breakthroughs in neuroscience allow us to better understand the brain's physiology, the role it plays in every aspect of our lives and, how to create deep transformative change.
Learning how brain programming drives how we think, feel, perceive, react, communicate, and connect allows us to remove separation, shame, and self-judgment from the equation. We can better understand our own humanity, and the challenges we face, as part of the human condition, with more empathy and compassion. We can more easily accept and transcend the universal limitations imposed by the mechanics of the human brain.
When we awaken our consciousness we can interrupt our default brain programming, and create new habits of thinking, feeling and doing. We can rewire and reprogram our own brains. We can choose how to perceive and respond to our own thoughts, feelings and experiences from the perspective of the higher consciousness of the heartmind.
The brain functions primarily as a highly efficient pattern-matching device. Unlike a digital computer, rather than assembling bits of data like thoughts and feelings, the brain is more like an analog processor that relates patterns and concepts to one another and looks for similarities, differences and the relationship between them. Similar to a DVR, the brain records every millisecond of our environment and experiences and organizes them into complex filing systems. Sensory input activates neural networks in the brain as it scans the present looking for matches, concepts, and patterns opening these files to construct a coherent image of the present moment, or reality. IQ therefore may be nothing more than a faster CPU or brain processor, which allows for higher speeds of information to be memorized by the brain.
According to research, only five percent of the human brain is conscious. The other ninety-five is unconscious programming and default settings of neural networks. All based on stored memory templates. It is believed that the unconscious mind creates what we experience as physical reality. If our brain is memory and it creates reality, then by definition, we're all living in the past while unconsciously creating more of the past as our future. One of the basic rules of quantum physics is that your environment is an extension of your mind. Some scientists further postulate that the brain hallucinates our reality to create what we experience as a multi-sensory, panoramic 3D, fully, immersive movie.
The brain is broken down into two hemisphere, right and left. The duel processing theory illustrates the two core functions or processing systems of each hemisphere. On a very simplistic level it can be broken down into conscious and unconscious processing or two forms of thinking, verbal-analytic and experiential. One function searches for actions to solve immediate problems. The other searches for actions that will solve problems, desires, and goals that can’t be solve in the current environment.
The left-brain is quantitative and analytical. It controls reasoning, logic, language, science, math and number skills. It is also aware of time and space. The right-brain has no sense of time nor space. It is fully rooted in the present experience of sensing and feeling the current experience. The right-brain is responsible for our intuitive, creativity, imagination, insight, music and holistic thought.
Over the years, as a result of evolution, societal programming, and the digital age, we have lost our holistic brain capacity. Most human's are now predominately left-brained without understanding the inherent flaws in their reasoning or thinking, ignoring the powerful wisdom and intuition from the right brain.
The brain is not designed to be content with the present moment. Nothing in what we experience NOW would have any meaning unless we had a previous memory of experiencing it in the PAST. If perceived reality is based on memory of past experience, then no human perceives reality the same. This creates what is known as reality gaps. Unconsciously and naively humans actually believe that others experience the same reality. Without conscious awareness, reality gaps create confusion, separation, exclusion, lack of empathy and compassion, and block authentic human connection. Language is the tool we use to communicate our experiences to one another in order to bridge reality gaps.
Metacognition || Meta-Awareness
In recent years there's been increasing research on metacognition, which is quite simply knowing that we know. But how do we know it? In other words metacognition is an awareness of our conscious thought processes. The brain's amazing ability to perceive the perceiver, to think about our thoughts, witness our feelings and emotions. This higher consciousness is witnessing our human experience.
Mindfulness and meditation are practices that strengthen our metacognitive abilities to act as the observer without attachment. When we realize we are not our thoughts, nor our feelings, that they are simply memory, we can detach from identifying with them. Using these methods allows neural connections with the heartmind to calm the nervous system, self-regulate and get our mind and bodies back into balance or with its natural state of homeostasis.
Energy and Neurons
Everything is energy. In fact humans are more energy than particle, neurons are our electrical wiring. They are electrically excitable cells that processes and transmit information by electro-chemical signaling. The average human brain has over a 100 billion neurons able to connected to up 10,000's of other neurons. They are in constant communication, passing signals to each other via trillions of synaptic connections. The brain is literally like a computer with a one trillion bit per second processor with a memory capacity from 1 to 1,000 terabytes. Neurons fire together to create neural pathways and networks that hard-wire through repetition of synaptic connection. What fires together hard wires together creating our brains programming and default brain networks that control beliefs, behaviors, thinking, feelings and actions.
Thoughts create emotions which create feelings. Emotions are energy in motion, e-motions. When we feel the same feelings we experience memorized emotional reactions that reinforce the same thoughts that created them. Feelings, create emotions which create thoughts about the experience. All of which results in observable changes to the physical body in the form of somatic processing. This repetition of thinking and feeling strengthens neural pathways that keep us in an unconscious state of auto-pilot. Even if the experience is painful or negative it doesn't matter, to the brain it's familiar - it's our default settings.
Famed neuroscientist Antonio Damasio's theory of consciousness explains that "emotions are a collection of unconscious neural responses - that feelings arise when the organism becomes aware of the changes it is experiencing as a result of external or internal stimuli, and the function of the self is to constantly detect and record, moment by moment, the internal physical changes that affect the homeostasis of the organism."
Thoughts create a chemical in the brain that fires in a sequential pattern or combination so that you feel the way you were just thinking. Negative thoughts cause stress, while positive thoughts create positive feelings, both triggering a release of hormones in the body. Dr. Joe Dispenza teaches that thoughts are the language of the brain and feelings the language of the body. The mind and body work together. When you think the way you feel, and feel the way you think, this pattern creates a state of being or personality. Feelings create moods, moods turn into temperaments - temperaments into personalities. Personalities create our personal realities.
Changing the Programs
The discovery of neuroplasticity disproved the scientific belief that the brain could not be changed once it was fully developed. It absolutely can, intentionally, consciously and daily.
Making conscious the unconscious, new awareness and the willingness to learn and unlearn is the first step in this exciting journey of self-discovery. Tools such as mindfulness, metacognition, pausing, and practices like meditation can support us in calming the mind in order to connect to the heartmind where we are able to trasnscend our brain programming to innovate and originate by heart.
